FAQs

How many thickness monitoring points can the WAND Remote Data Collector (RDC) cover, and what is its range?

The WAND Remote Data Collector (RDC) has 8 reader coils and can cover 8 thickness monitoring locations at any given time. The RDC uses Bluetooth 5.0 and has a range of 200 meters.

Do the WAND TM Sensors require calibration or maintenance?

The WAND Thickness Monitoring (TM) Sensors are passive and do not contain any batteries and once installed, they do not require maintenance. The velocity of the material is required to calculate the thickness, and this is assigned with the RFID on the sensor. A calibration against manual UT reading can be undertaken at the point of installation if required.

Can the WAND TM Sensors be operated through metallic weather jackets over insulation?

The WAND Thickness Monitoring (TM) Sensors can be operated underneath material up to 40mm thick. However, metallic materials block the short-range electromagnetic coupling. We have a solution for this, known as the ECHO, which is a thin PCB-based extension cable that fits through the joins in the waterproof jacket and can be applied over the top of the sensor. This means you can offset the measurement acquisition location to somewhere more convenient.

How are the WAND TM Sensors attached to a structure?

The WAND Thickness Monitoring (TM) Sensors are attached using an adhesive to bare metal surfaces. The adhesive also acts as a couplant for the ultrasonic signal and Inductosense has different adhesives depending on the temperature of the structure. To protect the sensor from environmental conditions, such as humidity, a specific coating is also applied over the top of it. The sensor can be operated through the coating.

What is the maximum wireless distance between the WAND Handheld Data Collector (HDC) and the sensor?

Typically 40mm stand-off with the TMS-B5R sensor (although this may vary depending on the application). We can also provide customised solutions with a larger reading distance.
